Punjab Horticultural Postharvest Technology Centre India is the largest producer of fruits and vegetables which have high income potential. It is estimated that one-third produce goes waste during post-production processes because of faulty handling practices leaving minuscule volumes for export and processing. In Punjab, the horticulture crops promise viable alternatives to paddy-wheat cultivation, provided the produce is marketed, exported and processed into value-added products. The causes of high postharvest losses and small processing volumes are lack of knowledge and skills on the part of farmers and marketers, besides the unavailability of appropriate technologies and infrastructure. Keeping these handicaps and the potential of horticulture in view, the Punjab Horticultural Postharvest Technology Centre was established in October 1998, on the Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) Campus, Ludhiana. It came into existence with collaborative efforts of Punjab Government, PAU, USAID-ACE Project and University of California Davis.
