The Department of Floriculture and Landscaping is actively engaged in research on collection, maintenance and evaluation of germplasm of rose, gladiolus, chrysanthemum, marigold, tuberose, foliage plants etc. Special emphasis is being laid on cultivation of ornamentals, post-harvest handling, seed and bulb production work, management of diseases of ornamental plants and production of disease free planting material. The department also evaluates different plant materials for their use in landscaping. The department offers courses in Floriculture and Landscaping to undergraduate and postgraduate (M. Sc., Ph.D) students. Different aspects like introductory floriculture and landscaping, commercial floriculture, nursery production and management, breeding of ornamental plants, post- harvest handling, landscape design, landscape planting material, etc. are covered in the curriculum. Advisement in flower growing is the main extension activity of the department. Services are also provided for making landscape plans and their execution for various organisations and farm houses. The department has evolved 42 improved varieties of flower crops like Gladiolus, Pansy, Sweet Pea and Chrysanthemum. |
