The Director (Seed) Centre at PAU, Ludhiana has the following mandate:

  • Production of adequate quantity of high quality seed
  • Conduction, co-ordination and monitoring research on different aspects of Seed Science and Technology.
  • Dissemination of information and imparting training on seed production, processing, packaging, storage and quality control
  • Establishing national and international linkages for strengthening seed research
  • On-field and laboratory monitoring and testing of seed produced by PAU under self-assurance quality control system.

Annually, PAU, Ludhiana produces around 73,000 q seed of field and vegetable crops (breeder, foundation, and certified/truthfully labeled). Seed production is being carried out at:

  • Raja Harinder Singh Seed Farm, Bir Sikhan wala, Faridkot
  • University Seed Farm, Ladhowal
  • University Seed Farm, Nabha
  • University Seed Farm, Naraingarh
  • University Seed Farm, Usman

The centre is engaged in various projects which are being operated with the following prioritized areas of research:

  1. Quality Seed Production
  2. Seed Production and Certification
  3. Seed Physiology, Storage and Testing
  4. Seed Pathology
  5. Seed Processing
  6. Seed Quality Assurance

These activities are being conducted through National and International linkage programs under various Projects, such as:

  1. All India Coordinated Research Project on Quality Seed Production under National Seed Project (Crops)
  2. All India Coordinated Research Project on Seed Technology Research under National Seed Project (Crops)
  3. Research on production and storage of vegetable seeds
  4. Equipping and strengthening of designated DUS Test centres under Central Sector scheme for implementation of Protection of Plant Varieties and Farmers' Rights Legislation, Ministry of Agriculture, DAC, Govt. of India (2003-15).

The centre has well equipped designated laboratories for Seed Physiology, Seed Testing and Seed Pathology. Lecture room-cum-laboratory equipped with overhead slide projector for post graduate and under graduate teaching and conducting training programs is also available.

The centre has about 7.5 acres of land with assured irrigation facilities through submersible tube well, underground irrigation pipeline system, pucca channels for canal irrigation, etc. for conducting research experiments.

Trainings on Seed Production Technology on hybrids, Seed Testing, Certification and Quality Control are regularly being imparted to various stake holders, alongwith organizing seed sales and demonstration of exhibits in Kisan Mela/Kisan Divas twice a year.
