BRAINSTORMING SESSION ON “SCOPE OF MEDICINAL PLANTS IN KANDI REGION OF PUNJAB”

A brainstorming session on “Scope of Medicinal Plants in Kandi Region of Punjab” was organized at Dr D R Bhumbla Regional Research Station (RRS), Ballowal Saunkhri in collaboration with Regional Centre, National Medicinal Plants Board (NMPB), Jogindernagar, Himachal Pradesh. Scientists from RRS, Ballowal Saunkhri & NMPB, Jogindernagar, officers from Punjab Forest Department across the state and progressive farmers participated in the brainstorming session. Dr. Parminder Singh Sandhu, Assistant Agronomist, RRS, Ballowal Saunkhri welcomed all the participants for the session. Dr. Manmohanjit Singh, Director, RRS, Ballowal Saunkhri gave an overview about the problems faced by the farming community and scope for the cultivation of the medicinal plants in Kandi region of Punjab. He emphasized on systematic research on promising medicinal species and marketing linkages of medicinal plant products. Dr. Arun Chandan, Regional Director, National Medicinal Plants Board, Jogindernagar gave insight about the functioning, mandate and role of the National Medicinal Plants Board in strengthening the research component and popularization of medicinal plants for the benefit of the farming community. He emphasized on invetorization of available medicinal plants in kandi region and to prepare the package of cultivation practices of Sarapgandha, Satavri and Jyotismati species. Sh. Daljeet Singh, DFO (Ext.), Division Phillaur discussed in detail the departmental schemes for the promotion of cultivation of the medicinal plants by the farming community. He informed the house that subsidy to the farmers is being provided on six medicinal crops namely tulsi, aloe vera, stevia, amla, aswagandha and chandan. Dr. Rajender Kumar. Agronomist, PAU, Ludhiana highlighted the work being carried out on medicinal plants at PAU. Dr. N.K. Sharma, Professor, IIT Rupnagar discussed regarding the on-going work on establishment of the incubation centre. He agreed for joint collaborative research projects on medicinal plants with RRS, Ballowal Saunkhri. During the discussion suitability of different crop species, their cultivation practices and marketing strategies were discussed. The farmers also shared their experiences regarding the cultivation of the medicinal plants and problems faced by them. Dr. Vijay Kumar, Assistant Plant Breeder, Dr. Anil Khokhar, Assistant Agronomist & Dr. Varun Attri, Assistant Silviculturist, RRS, Ballowal Saunkhri and Dr. Maninder Singh, DES, Jalandhar were also present in the meeting. Dr Raj Kumar, Agriculture Officer, Balachaur, Sh. Paramjit Singh, progressive farmer, Sh. Naresh Kumar (Director, FPO, Nurpur Bedi) and Sh. Lakhwinder Singh (Director, Suave Producer Company) also shared their experiences. Dr. Manmohanjit Singh and Dr. Arun Chandan summarized the session with the concluding remarks.
