PAU ISSUES ADVISORY TO MANAGE FALL ARMYWORM IN MAIZE
09-09-2020

The Punjab Agricultural University has issued an advisory to manage the Fall armyworm, an invasive insect-pest that has been found infesting maize in Punjab since mid June. Giving details, Dr P.K. Chhuneja, Head, Department of Entomology, PAU, said that the incidence of fall armyworm has, in general, been little in timely sown grain maize, and at this stage, it has further diminished. Based on the last years’ experience, its incidence in the coming days on fodder maize is imminent. So farmers are advised for thorough regular survey of their fields especially the late sown crop and take up immediate suitable management measures as soon as the pest is observed on the crop.During the regular survey, egg masses and younger larval instars can be collected and destroyed. Weather conditions in September-October are favourable for the infestation by this pest. The younger larvae feed by scraping the leaf surface making papery windows. The pest is easier to control in the initial stages of damage while the grown up larvae cause more damage making round to oblong holes in leaves along with large amount of fecal matter. The larva can be identified from four spots in square pattern at rear end and white coloured inverted Y-shaped mark on the head.

Management

  • Fodder maize should not be sown after mid August. Avoid staggered sowing of maize especially in the adjacent fields.
  • Incidence of the pest is higher in high density planting of fodder maize while it is lesser in mixed cropping, for example when sown along with bajra.
  • Apply recommended doses of fertilizers and irrigation, keep the crop healthy.
  • Collect and destroy egg masses of fall armyworm from leaves. Egg masses are covered with hairs and easily visible.
  • In case of higher pest attack, spray Coragen 18.5 SC (chlorantraniliprole) @ 0.4 ml per litre of water. Use 120 litres of water per acre for up to 20 days old crop and increase the quantity up to 200 litres as per crop growth. Direct the nozzle towards the whorl of the plant.
  • Must observe a waiting period of 21 days (after spray) before harvest to ensure safety of animals.
